What is a Bungee Pit?
|
|||
|
A Bungee pit is a polypropylene
trampoline bed that is suspended about three feet above the bottom of a
six-foot deep pit using bungee cord. Three feet of pit foam is then placed on
top of the ploy' bed in order to provide a safe, cost effective alternative
to conventional foam pits (see diagram and picture below). Consider the following features and
benefits of a bungee pit: |

1.
A polypropylene bed with 1 loops sewn every 5 around the perimeter
and 10 flaps that extend beyond the 1 loops. The bed will be about 12 smaller on both sides and both ends
than your pit. In the following notes
P=perimeter in feet=84; A=area in ft2=272. 2.
3.50*P feet of 0.5 bungee cord and one bag of hog rings. Thread the bungee cord through the 1
loops and secure the two ends with the hog rings. Put an S-hook on each end of the cord just up stream of the hog
rings. Leave a 6 loop of B-cord
between each 1 loop. Notes: you will need to adjust the length of the bungee
cord in order to get the proper tension in the poly bed; it is best to cut
the bungee cord into lengths of about 25 feet and work on opposite sides of
the pit (versus threading one long piece of bungee cord!). For this example use 300 of bungee cord and
25 hog rings. 3.
2.67*P S-hooks to stretch the bungee cord from the poly bed to the angle
iron bolted to the wall of your pit.
250 S-hooks. 4. P feet of 2 by 2 angle iron[1]. One leg of the angle iron will have
monkey wire with loops every 2.5 inches.
The other leg of the angle iron will have 7/16 holes every 18 (3
holes per 4 feet). For this example
you will need 21 sections of the 4 angle iron. 5.
P
feet of 1/8 bungee cord. 100. 6.
Concrete wedge anchors, 3/8" by 3.75". 3 anchors per 4' section of angle
iron. You will also need a hammer drill
(rent one, if possible). TO INSTALL YOUR BUNGEE PIT: 1.
The angle iron should be bolted to the walls of your pit three (3)
feet below the floor (if your pit is less than 6 deep than put the angle
iron half way between the top and bottom of your pit). Rent a hammer drill; note that the angle iron has three 7/16
holes per four-foot section; use these holes to mark the walls. TEST ALL BOLTS BEFORE PROCEEDING TO STEP
2. 2.
Lay the bed in the bottom of the pit. 3. Use the S-hooks to stretch the bungee cord to the monkey wire welded to the top of the angle iron. Adjust the tension such that you can jump in the middle of the bed without touching the floor of the pit. Also check the integrity of all the mollies. 4.
Lay the 10 flaps over the bungee cord. This will prevent the foam blocks (or little munchkins) from
squeezing in between the bungee cord.
Use the 1/8 bungee cord to loosely tie the flaps to the monkey wire. 5.
Fill the pit with your foam blocks and have fun! |

As an alternate
to using the hog rings to secure the ends of the bungee cord, you can simply
tie a knot in the end of the 0.5 bungee cord:

Lace the bungee
cord through the loops on the poly bed and secure to the monkey wire using
the S-hooks:
